Bug Description

This network device was previously working on two Linux devices: a Tivo, and my
gentoo installation that I had before installing ubuntu. I had to custom
compile with the drivers from sourceforge (http://atmelwlandriver.sf.net/), but
I was able to get things to work on gentoo.

I'm going to attach my output from dmesg upon bootup and login.

I assume this should be handled by the atmel driver...does "modprobe atmel" help?

modprobe atmel "succeeds" in the sense that it loads the module, but I don't see
anything new in dmesg.

The USB adapter is not supported by the in-kernel driver. The driver at
http://atmelwlandriver.sf.net/ should work. However it requires a patch to the
core USB system. I'm still looking at why it's needed and what impact it may
have on USB.

Patch for kernel doesn't cleanly apply to linux-source-2.6.8.1

This is usb.c.rej

There's another driver at Berlios:

http://at76c503a.berlios.de

This driver doesn't need the patch to the core USB system, and it seems to work
better than the other.

In Debian Sid there is a package for that driver, called at76c503a-source, which
depends of atmel-firmware (in Sid, too). Therefore, Debian has support for the
USB Atmel devices, although not during the install...

Is this change something we should merge soon, for stabilization during the

Confirming this. This device was working under Mandrake 10.0 official release,
by following the directions at:
http://www.jennings.homelinux.net/atmel_92.html

A workaround until this is part of the official distribution would be nice,
specially step-by-step instructions on how to install the driver mentioned in #9.

It mentions the older drivers are only needed for 2.4.* kernels, problems with
non-free portions of the driver, etc.

It's a good reason for to use te Berlios' driver (http://at76c503a.berlios.de).

I would like to see the Atmel USB devices working "out of the box" in Ubuntu, as
I can see now in Mandrakelinux.

Really, please add that driver to your kernel... Ubuntu is near of perfect on my computer. That at76c503 driver is
the only thing I had to compile, and unlike mandrake, when I install and set it up one time, it work :)

This is also needed for the Belkin F5D6050U 802.11b USB which is one of the few
(if there are others) wireless cards to work on the iBook G4 on both linux and OS X.
