To the press – Plea for boycott of an open prison meeting for Anders Behring Breivik
Anders Behring Breivik has expressed the wish for a public prison meeting. Wanting to tell the world about his anti-human and undemocratic ideology. Entering the last fase of his evil plan: propaganda.
We do not want to partake in any more of his dark thoughts.
I am a journalist graduate. I believe in the freedom of press and speech, which is one of the greatest rights we have in this country next to our democratic system.
I am also a member of AUF (Labour Youth Party). I believe in egality, solidarity and fairness.
In the light of the massacres at Utøya where I spent 10 of my teenage summers, it is these moral rights that I would like to lean on now. The press has the right to tell us what and why, and the perpetrator has the right for a fair case.
Anders Behring Breivik represents a vision and ideology that goes against the wider society´s understanding and basic respect for humanity. His manifest explains the background for his thoughts. His actions are the direct consequence.
The loner Behring Breivik might not have been an inspiration for other seeking souls previously, but that could easily become a reality now. His manuscript describes a plan that entails ideology, action and propaganda. Spending 9 years developing the ideology, a couple of hours putting the plan in to action and now time has come for propaganda. Therefore he willingly turned himself over to the police.
The social media were the first to broadcast the identity of the perpetrator. Then his message. Followed by our fearful and disgusted counter reactions to his cruelty. And our fear for his plans to succeed.
He will never succeed. We know that. We hope that 2083 will be a year with more solidarity and respect then the world of today.
In the time to come our journalists will be put to even bigger tests then they have already been through. So far so good. Now the time has come for the explanations, details and analysis. This will require competence and subtleness. We will never mute free speech. Regardless of where they originate from. Freedom of speech and deomcracy gives him the right to publicize his opinions. But as he violated our freedom he reduced his own. This is the natural process of a country we would like to live in. He will get to explain himself to the judges. But we shall do our best to prevent that this could aspire anyone to further hatred and terror.
Therefore I ask my journalist collegues to tread carefully in the time to come. Now that he is in the hands of the police and the court of law his rhetoric will not continue contradicted. Behring Breivik requests an open hearing during the custody meeting on Monday because he wants to continue his propaganda and his plan.
My plea and wish is for an empty court room with a sole perpetrator in front of a judge. This would hold great symbolic value. We know that he would love the attention and limelight of the cameras and press. He should not be granted his wishes. Taking more then 90 innocent lives should not grant anyone the right to step in to hold a public speech. In order to do that one engage in the democracy and policy.
The courtcase will begin. And the press will be there. To tell, explain and analyse. A wise and insightful commentary is necessary. But we will never express understanding for these actions or ideology.
The saying goes “Bring the Troll into the light for then it will explode.” An analogy which never has been more inept then now. The troll was in daylight. It exploded. Loud. We are sending the Troll back to the darkness.
The rest of us will stay in daylight. The AUF will debate as always, discussing ideology and wrestling with opinions. And we do not fear the dark forces.
